Algae Blenny

Algae Blenny

The Algae Blenny, also known as the Sailfin Blenny, has loads of personality and is a very active, peaceful and overall fun marine fish to observe and add to your home aquarium. Additionally, this fish is a very slow grower but can grow up to a moderate 5" as it matures. This fish has fantastic oversized eyes and a unique tan coloured body and the standard body shape of the blenny family.

Requirements
The Algae Blenny is a very peaceful fish when they are of a different family or shape, however if housed with another fish of the same family and shape it can show signs of aggression towards it in order to hold its territory and dominance. Additionally, the Algae blenny has been known to nibble on some SPS corals and clam mantles, but many argue that they are simply eating the algae in between the polyps.

Suggestions
Similar to all others in the blenny family, the Algae Blenny is most definitely rest against live rock, swim across the sand, hide in caves and consistently graze upon the rocks and glass eating macroalgae. It is important to only add this fish to those aquariums with a good amount of rock and algae.

Feeding
In addition to the macroalgae already in the aquarium, this fish will also do well if you add forms of vegetation into the tank. This can be a variation of spirulina, seaweed and algae pellets.

  1. In addition to the other comments, which I agree with, I’d like to add that the algae blenny is the smartest fish I’ve ever had. The dog-like comparison above is true. Before mine sadly died of old age, he used to patiently observe the various goings on outside of the tank. He would also land on my slightly cupped hand to feed if I wanted him to. Great fish. I miss him!

  2. I keep 5 (1 inch to 3 inches in length) in my 55-gallon aquarium for detritus removal. They do require algae to feed on but will eat meaty preparations (or whatever the eel leaves behind). They are very animated fish and are a good choice for large community tanks.

  3. I had a algae blenny clean up the green hair algae problem I had in my nano tank in literally a matter of days. Definitely the best solution to algae problems, and they also have an amazing personality and are fun to watch.
