The Panther Grouper is an excellent addition to any marine display. It has a wonderful white based body which is dressed in scattered black polka dots, this fish really does host an appearance like no other. Though these fish are usually bought and seen in fish shops at around 3 inches, in the wild it is not uncommon to see this species meet 22 inches in length.
The reason behind why this fish is such a great addition to a aquarium is because it is not only usually long lived but is also very hardy to fluctuations in parameters and water conditions and makes it a great beginners fish. Due to the fact that this fish can grow so large, it needs to be kept in a aquarium of at least 600 litres that holds a great protein skimmer and filtration. This is also a highly predatory fish and therefore should not be housed with very small fish as the chances are that it may eat them.
It is vital to note that this fish does not react well under basic copper medications, and therefore should be removed from the tank before treatment starts, or another medication should be used. This fish will thrive in any tank that hosts a significant amount of live rock that forms a great reef like structure with overhangs and caves.
The Panther Grouper possibly one of the biggest eaters in the aquarium trade, and must be offered a wide variety of meaty foods such as shrimps, clams, prawns and mussels.
